SILVER STAG AND DAMASCUS STEEL In 1774, a Swedish scientist found that the main element, other than iron, in the legendary Damascus steel was carbon, and launched the first manufacturing of crucible steel. Today, Silver Stag Damascus blades are manufactured using the same process. Multiple layers of steels (1094, 15N20, and some containing nickel) are forge welded into a block (billet). This billet is then folded and re-welded a number of times producing 100 to 150 layers and resulting in the billet. Acid added reacts differently with the different hard and soft steels and accent the unique pattern. The entire process results in a tough, flexible blade with invisible serrations that facilitate cutting. |
